We knew there was a possibility of afternoon thunderstorms, so we started from the trailhead an hour before dawn. Not only was the early start a good idea, but it also afforded an unbelievable view of the sunrise as we approached the tree line.

One the way up we encountered a variety of wildlife. This marmot didn't mind our passing by. He was too busy enjoying catching the few rays that peaked between passing clouds!

At the summit we quickly found ourselves joined by about 20 other people from from all over including England. A large group photo was definitely in order!

15 minutes after reaching the top, the dark clouds moved in and started dumping hail on us as the temperature dropped accordingly. Everyone began a mad dash to convert from shorts and t-shirts to cold weather rain gear and to set record times racing off the mountain back down to the tree line. It was hard to believe how many other people were trying to get up the mountain as we were all racing to get off--kids already shivering in light ponchos, t-shirts and shorts, ill-prepared for the more wretched weather conditions further up.
